Writers Say One Deleted Storyline From Avatar: The Last Airbender Would Have Been Too Extreme For Kids

While we would have loved to see Aang’s wrath, this deleted scene might’ve been just a tad bit too much for Nickelodeon.

Whenever the topic of Nickelodeon’s Avatar: The Last Airbender comes up, it brings a ton of nostalgia along with it. Throughout the three seasons of the animated series, fans got to witness the growth of their favorite characters, jaw-dropping storylines, some heartwarming moments, and whatnot. Needless to say, Avatar: The Last Airbender is the perfect choice for countless rewatches!

While Avatar: The Last Airbender has fans from all age groups, it was primarily targeted towards children. Thanks to the simplicity of the show, every element from A to Z was easy to understand for its younger audience. However, some moments couldn’t make the final cut as they would have been a bit too gory for the kids watching, including one scene between Aang and General Fong.

The Time When Avatar: The Last Airbender Almost Went Too Far

Considered one of the most aggressive generals in the Earth Kingdom Army, General Fong shows up in the second season’s first episode titled The Avatar State. Now, in this episode, Aang seeks to gain knowledge of earthbending by King Bumi, but General Fong had different plans. He insisted that Aang should defeat the Fire Lord by triggering the Avatar State, which he cannot enter willingly.

Therefore, General Fong takes it upon himself to trigger the Avatar State of Aang. After many failed attempts, he decides to play crook as he fakes Katara’s death in a last-minute attempt, which successfully triggers Aang’s Avatar State. However, Aang ends up destroying everything and anything around him and doesn’t stop even when Fong reveals that Katara’s death was just a ruse.

According to the extras in Avatar: The Last Airbender, there was almost another moment in the scene where Aang vaporizes General Fong while in his Avatar State. An X user writes, “The writers originally planned to have the Earth Kingdom General vaporized by Aang in the Avatar State.” However, the apparent storyline was canceled as it was deemed too extreme for a kid-friendly show.

Those who watched every single episode of the animated series religiously and still continue to have reruns of it were obviously bound to have some opinions about the claimed deleted scene. While many believe that the scene would’ve been absolutely epic, the writers were right to scratch it off as it might’ve been a bit too gory for a Nickelodeon show.

Some also believe that if the scene had happened, it would take away from Aang’s character. However, others are of the opinion that while Aang wouldn’t kill anyone for the world, he’d do it in a heartbeat for Katara and his loved ones.
