Hiroyuki Sanada Discusses the Potential For a Second Season of Shogun
Known for starring in movies like The Last Samurai, Bullet Train, and John Wick: Chapter 4, Hiroyuki Sanada has recently been in conversation for his performance in the historical drama Shogun. In light of the show’s successful reception, the actor has discussed the possibility of a second season of the limited series.

During his recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Sanada acknowledged the challenges of continuing the story as the 10 episodes of the series will “finish the novel’s period.” However, the actor remains optimistic about further exploring the narrative with the available historical context.
“No one knows what’s going to happen next,” he said before adding, “But we have history, real history models, and clearly, we know what happened.” The actor also emphasized the role of audience feedback in determining the future direction for a potential Shogun Season 2.
“It all depends on the audience’s reaction,” Sanada said as he expressed excitement about the global reach of the show, highlighting the broad impact and audience engagement the show has achieved.
Earlier, Shogun’s executive producer Michaela Clavell also shared that the potential for a second season would be based on the audiences’ reaction, as Cosmo Jarvis suggested that the history offers abundant dramatic material due to its extensive scope and the inherent dramatic potential of its events and figures.
Hiroyuki Sanada Expects Shogun to Influence Cultural Depiction in Media
Hiroyuki Sanada also underscored the potential influence the show could exert on the industry. Highlighting the inclusive approach for the mini-series, the actor said that Shogun plays an important role in the inclusive approach to storytelling, particularly when depicting cultures outside of one’s own.

“This kind of project is important to the future. I believe if somebody wants to create stories about other cultures, they should hire a specialist for each culture and actors from each culture. That’s going to be a new normal, I hope.”
While there has been no official confirmation for a second season, comments from the cast and creators suggest the potential for more captivating storytelling ahead. The potential Season 2 could expand the first season’s narrative or could potentially share a new story within the show’s framework. Three episodes of the series have been released with new episodes set to be released weekly on Hulu and FX.
