Season 6 of The Crown introduces some of Kate and William’s exes from St. Andrews, and this is what happens to them after the point of the show’s end.
Season 6 of The Crown introduces some of William and Kate’s real-life ex-partners from St. Andrews, but it does not show what happens to them after the relationships end. Following the life and reign of Queen Elizabeth II, The Crown wraps up with the representation of a time of torment for the monarchy. With the Queen dealing with feelings of obsolescence, the character takes a step back in season 6. This leaves room for the rest of the royal family, including Princess Diana, Princess Charles, and Prince William, to take on a larger role. Each character was highlighted in the final season, but their stories were not able to be fully told.
What Happened To William’s Girlfriends, Olivia Hunt & Carley Massy-Birch?
Olivia Hunt
Olivia Hunt was Prince William’s last official girlfriend before Kate entered the picture. The two reportedly dated when he was a first-year student at St. Andrews, and she was at Edinburgh University studying English and History. According to Express, in 2007, a friend of Olivia’s said that when Kate came around, she moved off pretty quickly. There seem to be no hard feelings between Olivia and William, as she was even invited to William’s wedding in 2011 and Pippa Middleton’s wedding in 2016. Also in 2016, Olivia married Nicholas Wilkinson, who is one of England’s most senior judges. Tattler reports that Olivia, herself, is currently the director of membership and strategy at Maison Estelle and Estelle Manor.
Carley Massy-Birch
The Crown, season 6, episode 7, “Alma Mater” depicts Prince William’s first girlfriend, whom he met at the University of Saint Andrews in Scotland. The show changes her name to Lola Airdale-Cavendish-Kincaid, though in real life, it’s Carley Massy-Birch. Carley was an English and creative writing student, and the pair only dated for a few months. Daily Mail reported that, according to Carley’s mom, she was deeply upset when the news broke about their short romance and that she went to great lengths to keep it a secret. She added that William, Kate, and Carley were all really good friends. The Making of a Royal Romance by Vanity Fair‘s royal correspondent, Katie Nicholl, detailed an uncomfortable occurrence between the three, however.
The book states that all three of them were at a party playing a game of Never Have I Ever, when Carley announced “I’ve never dated two people in this room“, knowing that William was the only one who had. It was reported this was the first confirmation of William and Kate’s relationship. Though, seemingly dramatic, Carley told Vanity Fair in 2010 that she and William just had a normal university relationship and that the pair would’ve gotten along well even if they didn’t have a romantic connection. Her current relationship status is a mystery and has not been confirmed.
What Happened To Kate’s Boyfriend, Rupert Finch?
William’s ex is not the only one who made it into The Crown‘s storylines. The show also chose to include Rupert Finch, Kate Middleton’s ex-boyfriend, in season 6 of the show. Though Carley’s name is changed on the show, Rupert’s is not, and he is a real person that Kate dated in 2001. Rupert was another classmate of Kate’s and was three years ahead of her in school. The pair reportedly only dated for less than a year before Kate began dating William.
Rupert has been very private about his relationship with Kate, telling Daily Mail in 2006 that it’s not something he’ll ever talk about because it’s between him and Kate and was a long time ago. It seems that Kate and Rupert are friendly with one another after their break-up, as Rupert attended Kate’s wedding. In 2013, he married Natasha Rufus Issacs and the couple has three children together. Professionally, Rupert is a lawyer who works at Williams Advanced Engineering.
