‘Shōgun’: John Blackthorne’s affection towards Toda Mariko sparks potential romance arc

Based on James Clavell’s book of the same name, ‘Shōgun’ follows a foreigner as he becomes embroiled in the power struggles of feudal Japan

In the feudal Japan of FX’s current historical drama ‘Shōgun,’ every character is vying for dominance, yet amid the political unrest, the story deftly depicts a captivating narrative of affection.

The narrative of the series focuses on the adventures of English pilot John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis), who unexpectedly finds himself involved in a power battle.

However, the story also centers on Blackthorne’s growing friendship with the astute and knowledgeable Toda Mariko (Anna Sawai).

Do Toda Mariko and John Blackthorne have a romantic relationship in ‘Shōgun’?

In the limited span of three episodes, it’s noteworthy to observe a potential romantic connection between Blackthorne and Mariko.

Due to a negative encounter with a translator in the past, the pilot, Blackthorne was initially tense with Mariko’s presence. However, as he witnessed her moral character, Blackthorne gradually became more receptive to her.

Mariko, having observed Blackthorne’s bravery in aiding Lord Yoshii Toranaga’s (Hiroyuki Sanada) escape, also developed trust in him despite her initial misgivings.

Will Toda Mariko and John Blackthorne ever become romantically involved in ‘Shōgun’?

It is safe to anticipate that in the next episodes of the show, Blackthorne and Mariko’s relationship will develop further.

The foundation for their future romance was deftly laid in episode 3, ‘Tomorrow is Tomorrow,’ as both characters confided in each other about their respective struggles.

While Blackthrone’s admission that he left his family behind to embark on adventures throughout the world surprised Mariko, the weight of her miserable marriage to Toda Buntaro (Shinnosuke Abe) was also examined.

Furthermore, Buntaro’s valiant demise suggests a possible romantic relationship between the two.

Although it’s unclear at this point if their friendship will develop into a committed partnership, their romance will still be clouded by Japan’s social norms, and it will be interesting to see what the future holds for this dynamic duo.
