Julia Roberts passed on Michael Mann’s The Last of the Mohicans where she would have worked alongside Daniel Day-Lewis.
Julia Roberts was at the peak of her career in the 90 as she starred in several box office hits in that decade. Films like Pretty Woman, Sleeping With the Enemy, The Pelican Brief, My Best Friend’s Wedding, Notting Hill, and Runaway Bride catapulted her career to new heights. She was the most sought-after actress in the industry at the time.
With all the huge successes, there were also major films that Roberts passed on at the time. This included a chance to star opposite a legendary actor like Daniel Day-Lewis, as she shockingly passed in 1992’s The Last of the Mohicans.
Julia Roberts Passed On the Chance to Work with Daniel Day-Lewis in the 90s
Julia Roberts was on the radar of many directors in the 90s and she starred in some of her most memorable films during the decade. She became popular among audiences for her rom-com feature films including Pretty Woman, Notting Hill, and Runaway Bride. However, she also passed on some major films at the time which have gone on to become iconic.
In a recent appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, Roberts was asked about movies she passed on in her career that she now regrets. The actress stated that fate played a major role in her career and she doesn’t necessarily ponder or feel regret over movies she passed on that became hits. She revealed that she passed on 1992’s The Last of the Mohicans starring Daniel Day-Lewis. She said,
“None that I have regrets about because I feel like it’s all destiny, I do believe that,” she said. “But what have I passed on that went to be great and wonderful, though maybe it wouldn’t have been as great and wonderful with me. You’ve Got Mail, The Last of the Mohicans, I can’t think of anything else.”
Roberts shockingly missed out on the only chance that she got to star opposite someone as legendary as Day-Lewis at the time. She never got another chance again after that. With Day-Lewis now retired since 2018, Roberts lost a golden ticket to witness an acting masterclass at work back in the day.
Julia Roberts Says Being A Rising Star Looks Exhausting Now
Julia Roberts has been in the industry for more than 30+ years. She comes from a completely different time when things were simpler and more liberated. She was a rising young actress in the 90s and she recently stated that being a rising star in the current era is complex and cluttered.
Speaking to Vogue, the actress compared stardom in the 90s and the current era, pointing out how being a rising star looks exhausting now. She claimed that young actors now have a lot of eyes and pressure to live up to many modern elements that were not there at her time. He said,
“Oh, it’s completely different from my time. I mean, that’s when I really feel like a dinosaur, when you just look at the structure of the business. It’s completely different. “I don’t know if it’s better, because it’s not my experience, but it just seems very different.
And in a way, it seems so cluttered. There are so many elements to being famous now, it just seems exhausting. There’s more elements, there’s more noise, there’s more outlets, there’s more stuff.”
Roberts most recently starred in the apocalyptic thriller Leave the World Behind, which was a huge hit on Netflix. The film had a stellar cast including Mahershala Ali, Ethan Hawke, Myha’la, and Kevin Bacon.
