Nicki Minaj speaks out against cultural appropriation in the fashion industry

“Designers get really big and really rich off of our culture.”

In a recent cover story for Dazed magazine, Nicki Minaj addressed her rise to power and what it took to get there. “I came into this industry and demanded more. I wanted more for female rappers. I wanted more for black women. I wanted to make more than what men were making. And I did it.” Ever one to turn words into action, the “No Frauds” rapper continued her pursuit of inclusion this week as she put the fashion industry on blast for cultural appropriation.

While the industry has been showing signs of progress as of late, examples of which include Dapper Dan’s recently announced Gucci partnership and Marc Jacob paying homage to the culture in his latest collection, Nicki Minaj made sure to drive home the point about the long history of fashion designers exploiting black culture. She did this after performing at Philipp Plein’s Spring/Summer ’18 runway show and thanked the fashion label for being among the companies that are championing diversity. “Thank you, Philipp Plein, for including our culture,” she said on the stage. “Designers get really big and really rich off of our culture, and then you don’t see a motherfucker that look anything like us in the front row half the time. So let’s make some noise for Philipp Plein tonight.”

Other performers during the show include Future, Yo Gotti, Rae Sremmurd, 21 Savage, and Teyana Taylor.
