“I’m avoiding it”: Emilia Clarke Cannot Get Herself to Watch House of the Dragon Despite its Skyrocketing Fame

Emilia Clarke has no plans to watch HBO’s House of the Dragon anytime soon, not even after the success of the prequel series. The actress famously starred as Daenerys Targaryen in Game of Thrones, and it seems all of her memories from the show were still fresh in her mind.

House of the Dragon premiered in 2022 and instantly attracted viewers from all across the world. Its viewership skyrocketed as the storyline progressed, and it is no doubt one of the highly anticipated series for this year.

Emilia Clarke Actively Avoids Watching House Of The Dragon

The Game of Thrones alum explained to Variety why she could not force herself to watch House of the Dragon. She was genuinely happy about its feat and even gave a shout-out to showrunner Miguel Sapochnik, but watching it felt off for the actress.

I just can’t do it. It’s so weird. It’s so strange. It’s kind of like someone saying, ‘You want to go to this school reunion that’s not your year? You want to go to that school reunion?’ That’s kind of how it feels. I’m avoiding it.”

Emilia Clarke received four Emmy nominations for her portrayal of Daenerys Targaryen, and it is definitely the role that propelled her to worldwide fame. However, she has also been very vocal about the treatment of her character as well as the direction of the original show. She told the Happy Sad Confused podcast:

I get why people were pissed. I totally get it. But, me being the actor, you can’t do justice to the character that you poured your blood, sweat, and tears into for a decade without getting on the same page. So like, I’m not just going to be there being like, ‘Fine, I’ll do the scene, whatever. I’m so pissed.’ You have to turn up.”

Her character’s demise in the season finale of Game of Thrones evoked a lot of resentment from fans. After all the efforts and hardships of the iconic Targaryen queen, she did not emerge as the champion of the throne.

Clarke is not the only Game of Thrones star who refuses to watch House of the Dragon. Lena Headey, who played Cersei Lannister, also finds it too weird to give it a try.

Showrunner Ryan Condal spoke with IndieWire and shared what fans can expect to see in the second season of House of the Dragon. The show will pick up after the events in the first installment, and with the forthcoming civil war, things will get more intense than ever.

This second season is about the kids that we only saw for a couple of episodes at the end of the series that are now grown up to be young adults who have dragons, who are of riding and fighting age, who have opinions of their own and a desire to get out there and defend the family claim.”

When asked how many more seasons they are planning to make, Condal said “more than two.” House of the Dragon Season 2 is expected to arrive in early summer 2024.
