Avatar: The Last Airbender actress Maria Zhang discloses which co-star made her feel star-struck.
Netflix’s live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender has brought about notable changes from the original series, particularly in the portrayal of Fire Lord Ozai, portrayed by Daniel Dae Kim. That’s not all as there were other notable and controversial changes as well.
The condensed format of just eight episodes has prompted adjustments to the storyline, impacting the narrative of Aang’s quest to restore peace among the warring kingdoms. Nevertheless, the actors gave it their all in the show and this included Daniel Dae Kim. In fact, Daniel Dae Kim left Suki actress Maria Zhang shocked for a good reason.
Avatar: The Last Airbender Actress Maria Zhang Was In Awe of One of Her Co-Stars
While speaking in a recent interview, Maria Zhang, who portrayed the role of Suki in Avatar: The Last Airbender, talked about the times she met Daniel Dae Kim. Maria Zhang admitted she feels starstruck every time she sees him.
Maria Zhang then added that one time he approached her himself to tell her that she was very good in her role as Suki in a particular episode, which left Zhang in awe.
”I’ve met DDK many times, and every time I feel star-struck. He just has that aura and at one point he came up to me and I was like ‘Oh my gosh.’ He was like ‘Maria, I just wanna say you were wonderful in your episode. Just wanted to find you tonight, let you know you were great.”
While the show did not turn out to be as faithful to the iconic cartoon that fans expected it to be, fans all agreed that Maria Zhang was excellent in her role as Suki.
Daniel Dae Kim Looks Forward to Further Explore His Character In Season 2
Netflix’s adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender generated a mixed response upon its release, with both praise for certain aspects and acknowledgment of areas needing improvement. Positive feedback was directed at the visual effects and production design, while criticism centered on the writing and pacing of the series. Notably, some events were presented differently from the original show.
Despite the varied reception, there has been no official confirmation from Netflix regarding a second season. However, the cast and crew have expressed enthusiasm about the prospect of a second season. Showrunner Albert Kim, in an interview with Teen Vogue, expressed interest in exploring the backstory of Ozai.
“I’d also like to see what happened to Zuko and Azula’s mom. These kinds of things are crucial to deepening the character, and I would love to see a little bit more of his history and how that informs who he is now.”
Daniel Dae Kim expressed his desire to delve deeper into his character and explore a more unhinged side. The season finale hinted at the Fire Lord’s ambition to conquer the Earth Kingdom, with his daughter Princess Azula already in control. Speaking to GQ about the future of his character in Season 2, Kim shared his enthusiasm for further character development and the potential for a more intense portrayal.
A descent into madness sounds like juicy territory for an actor, and it’s not something I’ve explored before on screen. Should we be lucky enough to get a season 2, I look forward to those conversations. Nothing is inevitable in this business and in this industry climate, but there seems to be a lot of excitement about it.
Despite the absence of official confirmation for a second season, the first one appears to establish the storyline groundwork for future developments. Only time will tell if a second season becomes a reality in the end.
