After leaving behind Superman and Geralt of Rivia, Henry Cavill looks forward to working on his Warhammer 40k show as well as a new Highlander movie.
Henry Cavill played Superman in the DC Cinematic Universe. That ended. Cavill played Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher on Netflix. He’s leaving the part. But the British actor remains in high demand. He has multiple big franchise roles lined up, most of them in the sci-fi/fantasy/geeky space he’s long been associated with, starting with a role in a new Amazon Prime Video series based on Warhammer 40k, the most popular miniature wargame in the world.
“it is the greatest privilege of my professional career to have this opportunity,” Cavill said on an episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz. “I can’t say too much, again it’s early days still, but to have this opportunity to bring it to the screen and be at the tiller so it can be faithful, is key to me,” Cavill continued. “This is the stuff I’ve been dealing with since I was a kid. This is the stuff I spend my free time daydreaming about, as an adult as well. And I get to bring it into life. And there is no greater reason that I joined the industry than doing something like this, and I’m very happy to be here.”
Warhammer 40k is a miniature wargame, meaning players deploy little figurines in battles against each other. The series is set in the distant future when scientific progress has stalled and mankind is busy fighting off both hostile alien races and armies of supernatural creatures. It’s bleak, dark and edgy, and should pair well with a more light-hearted futuristic series like Fallout, which is also coming to Amazon.
It’s interesting that Cavill mentions wanting to wanting to ensure that the series is “faithful,” since rumor has it that he left The Witcher in part because he didn’t think the Netflix show was faithful enough to the source books by Andrzej Sapkowski. As mentioned, Cavill has a producer credit on the Warhammer show, which theoretically means he’ll have a greater degree of creative control.
There’s no word on when the Warhammer show might come out on Amazon; it’s still early days. Cavill has a few big projects in the early phases, including a new Highlander movie with John Wick director Chad Stahelski.
Henry Cavill: “People are gonna be really, really pleased” with his new Highlander movie
We havent heard about the Highlander movie in a while, but Cavill maintains that it’s still in development, even if he can’t say much about it. “I really enjoyed the lore behind it, a tragic warrior with more of a story to tell than a cool guy with a sword doing cool things, and this goes even deeper into that,” he said. “What we’re doing with the development of the script is extraordinary. I think people are gonna be really, really pleased.”
The first Highlander movie came out in 1986. It’s about a group of immortal warriors fighting each other until there is only one left. Again, it’s a moody, dark, pulpy sort of story, which is what Cavill seems to like.
We don’t have a release date for the new Highlander movie, either. As for The Witcher, it will return for a fourth season sometime next year, with Liam Hemsworth replacing Cavill as Geralt. You can also see Cavill right now in the spy comedy Argylle, which is currently in theaters.
