The Netflix period romance is known for its intimate scenes and Nicola Coughlan says she did not get the ‘PG version’ she asked for as season three’s star.

Bridgerton’s Nicola Coughlan is finally getting a starring role in season three of the Netflix period romance, but the star has said her pleas for a “PG version” went ignored – so she will not be watching with her mum.
Coughlan has played Penelope Featherington since the show’s debut and is about to step into the limelight as her character finds love with fellow wallflower Colin Bridgerton – but despite their nerd status, she revealed that the steamy scenes have not been toned down at all.
She also told The One Show viewers on Wednesday that the new series was “a special one” and would give “nerds their moment in the spotlight”.

Nicola Coughlan’s family might be bursting with pride to see her step into the starring role of Bridgerton season three, but she definitely won’t be hosting any screening parties at home.
The Derry Girls star said she was delighted that her character Penelope Featherington was finally going to find romance with Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton), but she had not managed to convince the show’s bosses to tone down its notoriously raunchy love scenes.
Coughlan told The One Show: “It’s all change. It’s a very action-packed season. I got to see some last night, I was bouncing off the walls with excitement. It’s a special one.”
Asked about romance for Penelope, she said: “There just might be. She did her time, she’s waited, it’s about time for Penelope.”
“Watch it with your mum if you want, I won’t be watching it with mine. I’ll get her her own Netflix.”
The actor added that her co-star Adjoa Andoh, who plays Lady Danbury, had told her: “This one’s for the wallflowers, this is going to mean a lot to people.”
Coughlan said: “It’s the first season in which the leads are not the cool ones. Kate and Anthony – super cool, Daphne and Simon – mega cool, Penelope and Colin – nerds. I think all the nerds in the world are ready for their moment in the spotlight.”

Coughlan first found fame as one of the stars of sitcom Derry Girls, and when asked about the show’s celebrity fans who include the Kardashians, she added another huge name to the list.
She said: “It’s wild, it’s really crazy, that and Martin Scorsese was a crazy one – he’s a Derry Girls fan, who would have thought. Also I love that he can understand the Derry accent, that’s really impressive.”
The star added that he loved one of her co-stars: “He’s a big fan of Siobhan McSweeney, Sister Michael herself. Who isn’t? He has good taste.”
