“She’s decided she’s going to find a husband, she heads back to the ton,” said Coughlan, describing Penelope’s upcoming activities. “She’s like, ‘I gotta get away from the Featheringtons, they’re wrecking my buzz, I’m out of here. So she basically is like, I’m going to find a husband.'”
“Colin’s like, I’ll help you. And she’s like, ‘Fine, I don’t love you at all. This will work out great with no problems.’ So she finds some suitors, some more successful than others. But one is very, very fond of her. And she’s like, this could work.”
So, thrillingly for Bridgerton fans, it looks like season three, which is set to focus on the romance between Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton) and Penelope, is going to be high drama for Lady Whistledown as she really makes an effort at finding a romantic match. And all the while Colin, the man she has been infatuated with for years, looks on from the sidelines.
With just two months left to go until the third season is released, Netflix has, finally, been dropping teaser clips of the upcoming season. In one, Penelope cannot help herself complimenting Colin’s blue eyes; in a second, she tackles him about the comments he made at a ball in the last season, when he said he would never wed her – and she doesn’t pull her punches.
Another fan agreed, saying: “I love how he feels like he can just charm her, only to have her call him out! Perfectly acted and well done! So excited for the next season!”
The story will be complicated by the fact that Penelope is living a double life as Lady Whistledown, the anonymous writer of a society newsletter. Voiced by Julia Andrews, Lady Whistledown’s gossip column has caused its fair share of drama in the series before.
Though most people in the ton are unaware of her identity, viewers learned that it was Penelope at the end of season one, and at the end of season two, this was discovered by her best friend Eloise Bridgerton (Claudia Jessie), who felt betrayed by Whistledown’s writing about her and her family. As a result, the pair are no longer speaking – something that the new season will also undoubtedly focus on.
Bridgerton has become a phenomenon ever since it launched in 2020: the first season was streamed by 82 million households in its first month and became the number one show in more than seventy countries.
