The final twist in Bridgerton season 2 rescues the Featheringtons’ plotline, featuring a strong mother who will do anything to protect her daughters.
Bridgerton season 2 ended with a big twist regarding Jack that made the Featheringtons’ storyline much more interesting. The final twist made Portia Featherington (Polly Walker) a strong and multi-layered character as she takes her destiny into her own hands. By doing so, Jack’s twist seems to save what otherwise could have been a flat storyline for the Featherington family in the second season of the beloved Regency-era romance series.
Bridgerton season 2 focuses on the romance between Anthony Bridgerton (Jonathan Bailey) and Kate Sharma (Simone Ashley). However, it also includes a secondary plotline involving the Featheringtons, introducing the character of Jack Featherington (Rupert Young). Jack became the new Lord Featherington after the death of Archibald Featherington in Bridgerton season 1. Initially, Jack seems to bring financial stability to the Featheringtons as he pays off the family’s debts. However, after Portia traps him in a marriage with her daughter Prudence, Jack reveals that his jewel mines in America are worthless and he’s broke. Now that his plan to gain a fortune by marrying Cressida Cowper (Jessica Madsen), has gone up in smoke, he and Portia come up with a scheme to deceive the rich people of the ton by convincing them to invest in Jack’s mines and then flee to America with their money.
However, things do not quite go as planned and in the last episode of the season, Portia delivers one of the biggest twists of the season, a twist hidden in Jack Featherington’s name all along. In a powerful speech, she leaves Jack no choice but to return to America with nothing to avoid the scandal of the mines. While Portia’s involvement in this plotline could have led to rendering this character nothing but a preposterous villain with only money as a motivation, Jack’s twist creates a strong storyline for the Featheringtons and much-needed character development for Portia. In fact, Bridgerton season 2 ends by depicting Portia as a powerful mother, who will do anything to protect her three daughters, declaring that they are her only priority. With this twist, Portia’s motivation becomes clear, thus developing her character into one that the audience can admire and understand.
What Will The Featheringtons’ Storyline Be In Bridgerton Season 3?
Bridgerton season 2’s ending adds a new dimension to Portia Featherington: not only she is shown as a strong character, but she is also the head of the Featherington household in every way that matters. As such, this reinforces her role as the matriarch of the family that she has effectively carried out since the beginning of Bridgerton. This leaves the Featheringtons in an exciting place for the next season, now that Portia has the opportunity to become a fascinating and more well-rounded character in season 3.
Moreover, Bridgerton season 3 will focus on Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton) and Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan), the next romantic couple of the ton. Therefore, Penelope’s mother will most likely be even more involved in the main story in season 3. Not only will the Featheringtons be central in this upcoming season, but viewers will also see Portia’s reaction and perhaps involvement in her youngest daughter’s attempt at the marriage mart and eventually finding a match. Similarly, the Featheringtons’ storyline may also focus on Prudence and her mother’s effort to find her a suitable husband this season.
The Featheringtons are bound to get even more attention in Bridgerton season 3. With Penelope as one of the leads, audiences will gain an insight into the family and, hopefully, greater character development for the Featheringtons, particularly Portia. Perhaps in this season, the Featheringtons won’t be featured as antagonistic characters, often juxtaposed to their neighbors the Bridgertons, but instead as a powerful and fascinating family as the romance between two members of the neighboring families blossoms.
