The head writer of ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’, Aaron Ehasz, spilled the beans on potential season 4.

Fans of Avatar: The Last Airbender are familiar with the series’ complex characters, intricate storytelling, and powerful themes of redemption and self-discovery. One of the characters who enraptured viewers with her cunning intelligence and deadly skills was Azula, the powerful and ruthless Princess of the Fire Nation.

And, according to head writer Aaron Ehasz, Azula was supposed to embark on a redemption arc in the potential fourth season that has yet to come to fruition. Indeed, in April 2019, Ehasz shocked the fandom and gave them a glimpse of what could have been in the upcoming season. He therefore revealed on his personal Twitter that a fourth season of the show was once considered.

The main plot point that Ehasz addressed was Azula, Zuko’s rival and vicious, power-hungry sister. After being defeated by Zuko and Katara, she was left in chains at the end of the third season.

According to Aaron Ehasz, the fourth season of Avatar: The Last Airbender was meant to explore Azula’s redemption, focusing on her struggle to deal with the consequences of her past actions as she makes her way toward redemption. Ehasz revealed on X back in 2019 that he intended for the fourth season to feature a redemption story for the crown princess of the Fire Nation.

Zuko’s rival and sister Azula, who is ferocious and driven by power, was the primary plot point that Ehasz discussed. Book Three: Fire, the third season, saw Katara capture Azula through water bending and, in the end, defeat her, causing her to have a complete breakdown.

Having said that, Ehasz’s plans for the fourth potential season included giving Azula a redemption arc.

For the unversed, Azula is portrayed as a cold, cunning villain who craves dominance and power throughout the entire series. The daughter of Fire Lord Ozai suffered from a mental breakdown in the series finale as a result of her never-ending quest to fulfill her father’s expectations and prove herself.

Avatar: The Last Airbender Might Have Had A Fourth Season?

Aaron Ehasz spoke with Den of Geek recently regarding the almost-finished fourth season of Avatar: The Last Airbender. According to him, he was “always thinking” about producing a fourth season.

As Ehasz, 50, informed the outlet:

“In my mind I was always thinking this was going to be a four season arc. Mike and Bryan’s initial plan was three seasons, but there was a period where they were open to the possibility of a fourth season. There was a period where Mike said, ‘Hey, can you run season four?’ Then some of those plans got interrupted.”

According to Ehasz, Aang might have had some trouble in the fourth arc coping with what he took upon himself when he destroyed Ozai’s firebending strength. The co-creator of The Dragon Prince stated:

“My feeling about that was like there’s always a cost, right? There’s always some balance. You can’t just be like I’m the Avatar, taking your powers away. It’s a great power, but part of it is you just took all this evil into you. To take it away from someone else you’re holding onto it to protect the world.”

Could these plans finally come to fruition, given the recently announced 2025 release date (via Variety) for the untitled animated feature film on Avatar: The Last Airbender?

Maybe some of the greatest concepts from season four might find their way into a future Avatar film starring Aang, Zuko, or others. Gods of the Avatar, if nothing else, please give us an abundance of Azula!
