Netflix has renewed its live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender, and the announcement has settled one of the biggest concerns for the show. The Last Airbender follows Aang and his friends, Katara and Sokka, as they travel the world looking for masters to train him. The ending of Avatar: The Last Airbender season 1 left Aang, and the show, in an uncertain place, but a new announcement has proven there’s no need to worry.
Netflix renewed Avatar: The Last Airbender for two new seasons, which is an extremely promising development. The live-action show has been a complicated adaptation of the original, as The Last Airbender has made some questionable changes to the original show, as well as some good aspects The Last Airbender changed from the animated version. Those changes, while sometimes worrying, didn’t hold Netflix’s The Last Airbender back, and The Last Airbender‘s viewership even surpassed One Piece. It now seems that Netflix has also successfully avoided another, much bigger problem that could have ruined the entire show.
Avatar: The Last Airbender’s Double Renewal Avoids Netflix’s Cancelation Problem
Netflix has a history of canceling its original shows quite early on, which often leaves their stories unresolved. Luckily, the new announcement proves that Avatar: The Last Airbender will not suffer the same fate. Since the renewal includes two seasons, it also means that The Last Airbender will be able to tell Aang’s entire story, not just the beginning. The original animated show gave Aang a specific objective, to master the four elements and defeat Fire Lord Ozai before Sozin’s comet, and it would have been a shame if the live-action version was unable to show the conclusion of Aang’s journey.
Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender Will Stick To The Original Show’s Structure
The logos for Avatar: The Last Airbender seasons 2 and 3 indicate that not only will the live-action show finish out Aang’s story, it will follow the same structure as the original series. The original was separated into three books that followed the elements Aang had to master: water, earth, and fire. The image Netflix released alongside the renewal showed the logos for the next two seasons, with one green and the other red. The announcement and the images imply that seasons 2 and 3 will follow that same structure and show him mastering a new element with each season, though Aang still has to learn Waterbending.
What To Expect From Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender Seasons 2 & 3
Since the live-action version of The Last Airbender seems to be following the animated show’s lead, seasons 2 and 3 should be packed with excitement and new characters. In the original Avatar: The Last Airbender, book 2 followed Aang, Katara, and Sokka as they made their way through the Earth Kingdom, searching for a teacher. In their search, they met Toph Beifong, a young girl who was an extremely powerful Earthbender, and she became Aang’s teacher. Toph also brought along her strong personality, though, and she and Katara were often at odds with each other, which could cause conflict in season 2 of the live-action show.
Book 3 saw the group seeking out a Firebending master for Aang, but it proved more difficult than finding Toph. Zuko had a redemption arc in book 2, and he met up with Aang in book 3. Zuko became Aang’s Firebending teacher, but he wasn’t easily accepted due to hunting them previously. The process of the group warming up to Zuko should add intense drama to season 3 and provide quite a bit of character development. Though it’s likely to follow in the original’s footsteps, the live-action The Last Airbender could change any of these details, so the new seasons will still be a surprise.
While the announcement of Netflix’s renewal is certainly a step in the right direction for the future of Avatar: The Last Airbender, the show isn’t completely safe yet. It still risks running into problems as it begins adapting the later seasons of the original show, and there’s no guarantee it can maintain its popularity. Netflix also could still cancel the show despite its renewal, as the streamer has been known to in the past. Still, the renewal of Avatar: The Last Airbender is extremely exciting, and the new seasons can’t release soon enough.
